![]() ![]() The four of us were playing Bulletstorm’s Anarchy multiplayer mode, which is both ferociously ill-named and a functional antidote for anyone who claims Bulletstorm’s skillshots don’t change the game. ![]() We’ve got 21 enemies (and 21 more creative kills) left. I'm elated, and I want nothing more than to high-five my teammates into space, but there’s no time. I know somebody else got the FIREWORKS bonus for that flare, too. That’s the skillshot for wrapping somebody up with the flail gun, then killing them before the grenades explode. (TEAM) SADIST 100PTS flashes up on the screen. Up and up he goes, before detonating in a shower of sparks. Someone else has hit him with the flare gun. Instead of falling down, out of the sun, he gets catapulted upwards. But something happens as I’m about to detonate them. It's a hit, and the projectiles wrap neatly around his head. ![]() Eventually I take the shot, flinging two grenades attached to one another by a length of chain up towards him. For no good reason I pick an enemy directly between me and the sun, and try to draw a bead on his vague silhouette. On cue I send my character sliding into a corner, and watch as my friend uses his Lash to whip the ground with teeth-chattering force, sending all of our enemies tumbling into the air to freeze high above us, trapped in temporary slow-motion.Įveryone on our team takes aim and opens fire. “Sending ‘em up!” cries my real-life teammate from the other side of the room. That’s the perfect set-up for a dick joke, by the way. Will it be any good? At EA’s invitation I sat down for a lengthy hands-on. If you couldn’t care less about the motivations or characters but want to experience some sick gunplay and a deeply synergistic combat system, I highly recommend Bulletstorm.Following the recent wash of ingenious marketing and controversy it’s a little tricky to remember that Bulletstorm is simply an FPS from the Painkiller developers, coming out in less than 2 weeks. The gunplay is fundamentally similar to other games and only becomes unique with the weapons like the Sniper rifle’s slow-mo tracking and the Flailgun’s potential for multi-kills, but the expansive skillshot repertoire is what carried this game’s story and the hours afterward. It reminds me of the Arkham combat challenges in that respect. The potential of the Skillshot system is fully realized in these vertical slices of combat, pushing yourself to get a better score than last time. The incentive to rack up points and chain together different skillshots might not appear in the story mode, but take one step into Echo Mode or Anarchy Mode and the game changes completely. The visual differences in environment by the end were actually pretty impressive, and I have to acknowledge the ridiculously cool set pieces like the Mini-City and the monster from the Helicopter.īut man, the combat. They were fun sandboxes to have combat in, so they did their job in the end. The level design was interesting, if not fairly horizontal and basic. Even General Serrano, a fairly standard drill sergeant type loses his appeal as the antagonist pretty quickly. They felt like cookie cutter FPS characters, complete with the soldier machismo and constant swearing that wore thin fairly quickly. The first thing I reflected on after beating the game was just how shallow and frankly unlikeable the characters are. See Bulletstorm and decide “why not?” Ran through the campaign in about 12 hours or so and I have some thoughts. I had gotten it for free on PS Plus many months ago, and like other plus games I added them to my library and decided to come back when my backlog was smaller.įast forward a few years and I’m looking for something to play.
